Story

Outturn was founded in 2021 by Julia Anderson after developing an idea to create premium styled family clothing for work and leisure. Classic styles inspired a range of functional “forever pieces” for her farming family.  We are committed to quality at every stage of the process. Trans-seasonal pieces are the staple of the label with natural fibres being the foundation.  We are backing Australian grown and milled fibre and on-shore manufacturing. To this our process incorporates the cyclical economy of minimal waste ensuring offcut fabric is used to reduce deadstock that goes to landfill as it has always been in the sewing rooms of previous generations - save and re-use offcuts.  Outturn ‘out-turn’ is derived from commerce to mean the amount of something produced or process of sequence, delivery of a high value commodity or work of production. For Julia it is the moment of anticipation between delivery and acceptance.

Journey

A maker at heart, Julia drew on her previous career and background with skills taught by her mother, aunts and grandmother. In a creative tradition going back generations the skills to create, repair and modify clothing is routine. When Peter’s phone spiralled through an auger into a grain truck one sorghum harvest three years ago, Julia started to trial different solutions and sewing samples of work shirts. We knew others in our industry were experiencing the same frustration in their work day. The creative impulse to develop this idea was snatched from small hours out of the farming seasons. With limited time to be able to continue making modifications to our work shirts, the venture of making premium styled family clothing a commercial proposition was set.

Design Process

Derived from practical ideas of the essence of classic style and features, inspiration is derived from timeless clothing that should look just as good in seasons ahead as it does on the wearer today. Inter-seasonal clothing appeals because it should last for a long time like clothing used to decades ago and the crossover of work and leisure means that the styles should look great anywhere. The colours of our surroundings are inspiration too. The washed-out sun bleached landscape colours are perfect for the coolness of tone needed for comfort during the day. As anyone who has had to wear a dark coloured shirt in the tropical sun knows, colour tone plays an important part in the design. From sample construction to the selection of fabrics, there is rigorous attention to the requirements of discerning clientele who appreciate superior quality.
